Does this mean that you can’t shower during a spray tan? Of course you can, within reason. The spray tan should last 5 to 10 days if you shower about once a day. Your spray tan will fade as you lose the layer of skin that was treated with the spray tan. The exfoliation that occurs when you wash yourself can make you shed this skin faster. So, while regular showering is fine, vigorous scrubbing can make the tan fade faster. Swimming in chlorinated and salt water is also thought to make the tan fade faster.
So if you can’t shower right after a spray tan, should you shower right before application? With the knowledge that you won’t be able to shower for some time after the tan, it’s tempting to jump right out of the shower and into the spa for your spray tan. Unfortunately, it is not ideal to apply a spray tan to wet skin. Try to wait 1 to 2 hours after showering to get your spray tan to make sure that your skin is completely dry. Make sure that your skin is naked: with no lotion, deodorant, or perfume as these can create a barrier that can keep your skin from absorbing the spray tan and cause an uneven or ineffective application.
Wondering about the effects of shaving after your spray tan? When you shave, the razor does a great job of scraping the hair off of your legs… but it also removes the top layer of skin. Since the skin is where that beautiful glow lives, removing it will make your tan fade faster. The natural exfoliation that occurs when shaving is a great way to prep for your spray tan, so it is recommended that you shave before application. After application, shave only when absolutely necessary to prolong the length of your tan.
